The State of Kansas operates nineteen community colleges, five technical colleges, and six technical schools under the Kansas Board of Regents. Kansas community colleges exist to fill the needs of the surrounding communities and attending students. Kansas community colleges offer associate degree programs as well as professional certificates and vocational training. As part of its associate degree program students in attendance can complete core classes to transfer to complete their undergraduate or graduate degree or field of study.

The Kansas Board of Regents was enacted in 1925 and governs the state's six universities and nineteen community colleges. The goal of the Board of Regents is to provide quality educational policies in an effort to improve the overall learning experience. The Board consists of nine members appointed by the governor. Members serve on a variety of committees designed to address higher education issues. Members serve on a voluntary basis.
